At TC Tech Prep, our physical or electronic books come with a free course that can be taken offline or online. We are often asked if there is more value in taking the course with an in person Instructor vs online. Our answer is simple- they both have equal value.
Technology has equipped online classrooms with integrated whiteboard/chalkboards, the visual capacity to see each other, and even write together. The quality of instruction does not vary with either option either. The same teacher qualifications are required for an online or offline Instructor. During class, students can also easily stop the Instructor to ask questions and interact in the same manner of a real classroom. So what makes the difference in how much is learned in an offline vs. online course? That answer depends solely on one thing- the learner.
The questions below can help you evaluate if you are a learner who may not benefit as much from online courses:
- Do you need someone to push you to stay self-motivated?
- Does your home not provide a quiet area available to be in during online course instruction? Even with headphones your background can be a distraction.
- Is it hard for you to stay focused?
If you answered yes to 2 or more of the questions above- we recommend an in-person course.
The benefit of in-person courses for a student who is easily distracted or lacks self-motivation, is the teacher can do more to keep you on task. In online courses, the teacher can not as easily tell if the student is distracted. Our teachers are trained to ensure every student within our small classes is participating in activities to build their score. However, there is no way to tell if you are also multi-tasking with distracting activities that a home can naturally provide.
